Mira had always trusted libraries more than maps. Maps asked her to believe in streets, crossings, and the authority of blue lines. Libraries asked only that she enter quietly and pay attention.
On the night the rain turned the avenue into black glass, Mira returned a book she had not borrowed. The receipt inside carried tomorrow’s date. The ink had not dried.
At the rear of the public library, between Genealogy and Municipal Records, she found a door she had passed a hundred times without seeing. It was narrow, walnut, and warm to the touch. Above it, gold letters read: The Midnight Archive admits readers, not tourists.
She should have gone home. Instead she pressed her library card to the brass plate and listened as the locks answered like pages turning.
